Stainless Gas Springs for Boats and Marine Applications: Saltwater Resistance

The sea is the harshest environment in the world for metal. A gas spring working on a boat's hatch cover, engine hatch, seating chests and deck lockers is exposed to salt spray, humidity and UV all at once. A standard gas spring that runs trouble-free for years on land can be covered in rust blooms after a single season on a boat.

The inox difference: body, rod and end fitting together

In a marine application, "stainless" has to be a whole-system definition: body, rod, end fittings and fasteners must all be specified stainless together. Fitting a stainless body over a standard rod, or bolting a stainless gas spring to a galvanised bracket, simply moves the corrosion to the weakest point. On open decks and in direct saltwater contact, AISI 316 grade is preferred; in enclosed/sheltered areas, 304 can be sufficient.

Hatch and engine covers: heavy lid, wet environment

Engine hatches and hold covers are both heavy and must stay safely open on a boat rolling with the waves. The force calculation should consider the vessel's heel scenario in addition to the lid weight; on heavy lids, twin gas springs combined with a mechanical support strut is the safest solution. The gas spring carries the lid — but for hatches that must stay open under way, locking must be handled separately.

Mounting and maintenance: the details that double the life

Rod-down mounting is even more critical in marine use: it reduces salt crystal build-up in the seal area. Rinsing the gas spring with fresh water at the end of the season and wiping the rod is the most effective maintenance at near-zero cost. Never apply abrasive paste or a wire brush to the rod surface — a micron-deep scratch is the end of the seal.

Three notes for boat builders and marine distributors:
· Speccing all gas springs on RIBs and open boats as 316 lowers service cost over the long run; the price difference is small next to the cost of complaints.
· For distributor shelf stock, identify the three fastest-moving sizes (hatch-chest-engine cover) and stock them in inox.
· On OEM projects, request a salt spray test report — we include it in your technical file.
