Gas Springs for Tipper Trucks and Body Hatches: Service Life Under Vibration and Load
Commercial vehicle bodywork is one of the heaviest duty environments a gas spring can operate in: toolbox lids, side hatches, tarpaulin/cover mechanisms, rear doors. The vehicle generates hundreds of kilometres of vibration every day; hatches get closed with gloved hands, in a hurry, sometimes with a kick. Here, attachment and mounting detail determines service life far more than product choice does.
Vibration: it kills the attachment, not the gas spring
In a large share of "the gas spring failed" cases coming back from the field, the failure is not the gas spring but a loosened attachment. Three rules for a vibrating chassis: metal-bushed connections on eyelet end fittings, lock nuts or spring washers, and mounting alignment that keeps the gas spring free of side load. Ball-stud end fittings tolerate angular misalignment, which makes them a good choice on bodywork — but on plastic-socket versions, a dust seal is mandatory.
Mud, salt, pressure washing
Winter road salt plus a weekly pressure wash wears out a standard coating within a few seasons. On vehicles with heavy salt exposure (snow ploughs, municipal fleets, coastal-region distribution) a stainless body shows its worth here. During pressure washing, keeping the nozzle away from the seal area matters enough to be written into the service leaflet.
Force and safety on heavy hatches
Aluminium side hatches look light, but they are long; as the centre of gravity moves away from the hinge, the required force grows. Use the calculator for the sizing, and remember: on a heavy upward-opening hatch, the gas spring is a comfort element, not a safety element — securing the hatch against wind or on a slope must be handled by a separate locking mechanism.
· If different hatches on the same vehicle use different forces, stock the gas springs by label code; the "they all look the same" mix-up is a service cost.
· On fleet vehicles, the cycle count per hatch is high — state the daily open-close count when requesting a quote, and the product group is selected accordingly.
· If motion control is needed on tipper applications (slowing the closing movement), the right answer is not a gas spring but the damper (HK/HA) product group.
