Gas Springs for Pergolas and Glass Balcony Systems: Wind Load and Outdoor Durability

The pergola and glass balcony sector is one of the toughest outdoor applications a gas spring can face: the system runs under a +45 °C summer sun and in a −15 °C winter frost, with wind load and rain on top. A gas spring specified for indoor use will not survive two seasons here.

Wind: the force nobody puts in the calculation

When sizing the force for an opening pergola panel or a top-hung glass balcony hatch, most calculations account only for the panel weight. Yet a panel in the open position can see several times its own weight in wind loading. The practical approach: select the force from the weight calculation, but reinforce the attachment points (brackets, hinges, screws) for the wind scenario. A gas spring is not a wind brake — in windy regions, provide a separate mechanical lock to hold the panel in the open position.

Temperature swing: a system set up in summer sags in winter

Nitrogen pressure changes with temperature: every 10 °C means roughly a 3.3% change in force. A hatch tuned to "perfect balance" at 30 °C in summer gets 13% less support at −10 °C in winter and starts to drop. For outdoor applications, verify the force at the coldest operating temperature of the year; step up one force grade if needed.

UV, rain and surfaces

Outdoors, protecting the rod is the first priority: rod-down mounting preserves both lubrication and seal life. In coastal regions and on facades with heavy rainfall, choose a stainless body/rod; inland, a standard body with a quality coating is sufficient. Brackets and fasteners must carry at least as much corrosion resistance as the gas spring itself — bolting a stainless gas spring to a carbon steel bracket breaks the chain at its weakest link.

Three notes for pergola and glass balcony fabricators:
· If panel dimensions vary from project to project, define two or three standard force grades and map panel sizes onto them; you avoid recalculating the force for every project.
· On powder-coated panels, do not drill the gas spring attachment after painting — corrosion starts right there.
· Do not tell your customer "it opens a bit heavy in winter"; with the correct force, that sentence is never needed.
