Why Does the Lid Drop in Cold Weather? Temperature vs. Force

Every winter we get the same phone call: "It was fine all summer — once the weather turned cold, the lid stopped staying up." The product has not failed; physics is simply doing its job. A gas spring's force comes from the pressure of the nitrogen inside it, and gas pressure changes with temperature.

The rule: every 10 °C ≈ 3.3%

F1 force is measured and specified as standard at 20 °C. For every 10 °C change in temperature, the force changes by roughly 3.3% in the same direction:

• A gas spring rated 400 N at 20 °C delivers ≈ 360 N at −10 °C (a 10% loss).
• The same unit delivers ≈ 440 N at +50 °C (10% extra).

On a lid sized right at the limit, a 10% loss is the difference between "stays up" and "drops". Excess force in summer, on the other hand, makes the lid hard to close and strains the hinges.

The fix belongs in the design: winter margin

For any application that operates outdoors or in an unheated space, the lowest operating temperature must be included in the force calculation. The practical way is to choose the reserve factor for the winter condition: 1.2 is enough for indoor applications, but use 1.3 outdoors — and always state the temperature range when ordering. Our standard products operate from −30 to +80 °C; anything outside this range calls for special seals and oil.

If the force turns out too high: the valve option

For precision applications where you want to trim out the seasonal difference on site, we build gas springs with a release valve (V): using the pressure adjustment valve on the body, you can reduce the force in steps directly on the application. The important limitation: the valve cannot add gas, it can only release it — so a valved unit starts slightly above the target force and is adjusted down in place.
